The Dome

The largest domed building on the land of cob.gr, The Dome serves as an affordable and comfortable alternative for low-impact living. This project started as our official proposal for housing vulnerable population groups such as refugees. Despite their lack of resources, refugees on the Greek islands do have on thing in abundance, which is pieces of clothing donated from all over the world. It was this fact that led us to design a building for them using this widely available and mostly underutilized resource.

The structure consists of a wooden geodesic dome, constructed out of triangular frames screwed together in an intricate pattern, covered with old clothes and rags dipped in lime putty. It is insulated with sheep’s wool and kept warm in winter through the use of a rocket mass heater and passive solar house design.
